Cross-border vehicle movement from January: Quader

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader yesterday said cross-border movement of vehicles and vessels between Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal (BBIN) will start from January next, reports BSS. “Few problems may arise in the beginning. But we have to implement it overcoming all disagreements,” he said at a seminar in a capital’s hotel. The seminar titled “Regional Communication Infrastructure” was organised for the delegates of the BBIN Friendship Motor Rally here. The minister said “Bangladesh and India have able to sign land-boundary agreement wiping out all suspicion and mistrust. Similarly, all the border issues will be resolved,” he said. Quader said a workshop for the officials of BBIN will be held in Kolkata from Dec 3-4 to finalise the modalities of the cross-border movement of passenger, cargo and private vehicles. As many as 80 representatives from the four countries reached Dhaka in a cavalcade of 20 vehicles on Sunday.
The rally was flagged off in India’s Bhubaneswar of Odisha on Nov 14. After travelling 3,500 kilometres in 15 days, the motorcade reached Dhaka on Sunday. From Dhaka, the motorcade will proceed to Kolkata via Benapole in Jessore on Dec 1. The rally will end with a seminar in Kolkata on Dec 2. The motor rally was organised on an experimental basis as part of this agreement. Bangladesh, Bhutan, India and Nepal signed an agreement to facilitate cross-border movement of passenger, cargo and private vehicles in between the four countries on January 15 last.
