Customers were mostly unhappy over the services of private banks while specialised public banks satisfied their clients most, according to a report of Bangladesh Bank (BB) released yesterday, reports BSS.
“The central bank resolved all the complaints lodged with the BB against different banks”, Governor Atiur Rahman said after launching the report at a programme at the central bank’s headquarters in the capital city.
The annual report of BB’s Customers Interest Protection Centre (CIPC) revealed that the central bank in the 2014-15 financial year (FY15) received a total of 3,930 complaints against different banks.
Of the total complaints, nearly 60 per cent were against private banks while only 28.13 per cent were against state-owned banks.
The specialised banks apparently satisfied their customers as only 3.82 per cent of the total complaints received by BB were against them.
The foreign banks operating in Bangladesh and the non-banking financial institutions (NBFIs) also held better positions as the foreign banks and NBFIs shared only 5.86 per cent and 5.82 per cent of the total complaints accordingly.
Introduced in March 2011, the CIPC received maximum 265 complaints against different branches of the state-owned Sonali Bank when the number of complaints against Rupali Bank was 149, Agrani Bank, 140 and Janata Bank, 106.
Among the private banks, the highest 175 written complaints were lodged against Brac Bank when Standard Chartered was at top among the foreign banks as the CIPC received 175 complaints against it.
Out of the total complaints, the central banks received 1,388 from customers by phone and the rest 2,542 in written.
