BSS

Underscoring the need for building trained manpower and volunteers to face natural disasters, President Abdul Hamid yesterday said advocacy activities and increasing people's awareness can help reduce losses of natural calamities to a large extent, reports BSS. Most of the urban physical infrastructures in Bangladesh are not earthquake-tolerant, he said, adding that plans will have to be taken considering the rescue activities in such a situation and at the same time people will have to be informed about their immediate responsibilities during any natural disaster. He was addressing the opening session of "Role of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society in Disaster Management" at Radisson Hotel in the capital.
Referring to the recent earthquake in Nepal, the president said the tremor has increased the rate of recurrence of such natural disaster in this region. Bangladesh is one of the major natural disaster-prone countries in the world because of its geographical location; he said and added that two cyclones in 1970 and 1991 took heavy toll on the people and property of this country.
He said disasters caused by global climate change have become a matter of concern for the people across the world and the global climate summit is being held in Paris with a view to protecting the global environment from the negative impact of the climate change.
Mentioning the observation of the environmental scientists that costal area would go under water because of a rise in the sea level as a result of climate change, Abdul Hamid said billions of people would become homeless and refugee. Besides, the frequency of cyclone, floods, and drought would be increased, he added. "Under this situation there is a high possibility of increasing the natural calamities in Bangladesh," he said and asked all including the disaster ministry and Bangladesh Red Crescent Society to formulate plans in advance taking this entire situation into consideration.
The president appreciated the activities of BRCS and said BRCS has been playing a very significant role in extending humanitarian services to the distressed people of Bangladesh since its inception. He extended thank to the Federation of International Red Cross and Red Crescent Society for their support and cooperation to the distressed people of Bangladesh at the time of urgent need.
"I hope that international humanitarian organizations will continue their efforts to our people in the days to come," he added.
Organised jointly by the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, BRCS and International Red Cross and Crescent Federation, the conference was attended, among others, by Disaster Management and Relief Minister Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, BRCS chairman Hafiz Ahmed Majumder, vice-chairman Professor Dr Habibe Millat and disaster management and relief ministry secretary Md Shah Kamal.
