Untrained teachers

Under the circumstances, the government should make the Bachelor of Education degree mandatory for secondary school teachers and provision for untrained teachers to earn an education degree within the stipulated time for enjoying MPO (monthly pay order) facilities

That about half of the secondary teachers in the country have no training, as a study released this month revealed, is highly worrying to say the least. A report on this appeared in a daily newspaper on November 29. Education is the backbone of a nation and the future of a nation greatly depends on the performances of students. Only competent teachers can help  the making of meritorious students who are supposed to shine in various disciplines  of life and shoulder the responsibility of the country. Today’s students are the future doctors, engineers, administrators, lawyers, teachers and entrepreneurs of the country. But if their education is based on weak and questionable foundation, how will they shine ?  How much will they learn from the teachers who themselves are not competent enough ?  But it is difficult to become competent teachers without undergoing required training.
As reported, about 46 per cent of the more than three lakh teachers of schools, colleges and madrassahs offering secondary education are not trained. Of them, 35 per cent school teachers, 43 per cent school and college teachers and 75 per cent madrassah teachers are untrained. Needles to say, this state of affairs hampers  classroom teaching. Where teachers are not trained properly, the same results in poor quality classroom education and students become dependent on  private tuition, coaching and note books. This offers little scope for creative imagination and stimulation.
The government’s latest learning assessment survey showed that about 92 per cent class six students lack required competence in English, 89 per cent in Bengali, and 82 per cent in mathematics, three major subjects. The survey also showed that only 34 per cent class eight students across the country had competence in English, 35 per cent of them had competence in mathematics and 49 per cent in Bengali.
Under the circumstances, the government should make the Bachelor of Education degree mandatory for secondary school teachers and provision for untrained teachers to earn an education degree within the stipulated time for enjoying MPO (monthly pay order) facilities. The teachers who will fail to obtain the degree must be kept out of the MPO facility. There should not be any compromise where the quality of education is concerned. Besides, the government should arrange for training, in-service or professional development training for all teachers at primary, secondary or higher secondary levels from time to time for making competent teachers for imparting quality education to students.
