The Bangladesh-France joint excavation team has unearthed some ancient archaeological objects, including brick-built structures, in Mahasthangarh (ancient Pundranagara) in Bogra, recently. Naheed Sultana, regional director (CC), said that the team stumbled upon northern black polished ware (NBPW), ornamental bricks, terracotta (TC) bead, glass bead, TC net sinker, along with a huge number of potsherds.
Led by Sultana, Md. Mojibur Rahman, custodian, Mahasthan Museum in Bogra, Helima Afroz, custodian, Rabindra Kacharibari in Sirajganj, research assistant SM Hasanat Bin Islam, senior draftsman Md. Afzal Hossain, photographer Abdul Kalam Azad, and surveyor Md. Lokman Hossain, began the excavation on October 24 this year.
“The joint venture team unearthed some NBPW at the site, which were used from 4th century BC to 2nd century AD, in this sub-continent,” said Sultana.
“The seven-member team dug out perforated tiles, a huge number potsherds, ornamental bricks, and ancient brick structures,” said Md. Mojibur Rahman.
Most of the structures were built using ancient bricks, including the Gupta period. The team also found some earthen pots, along with some other archaeological objects.
Bengal has had a long history of kingdoms and dynasties. Being an integral part of the human civilisation in South-East Asia, this history dates back to at least 3,000 years.
Here, marks of the Pala, Sena, Maurya, Gupta and Mughal dynasties can still be seen in the heart of Pundra. The almost forgotten spot, only 12 km from Bogra town, upholds the glorious cultural identity of the Bengali nation.
Earlier, archaeologists have found earthen pitchers, pots, potsherds along with other objects, including a pit.
