Shahid Faroj-Jahangir Day was observed through holding different programmes in Mymensingh yesterday.
Sheikh Mohammad Firoj and Jahangir Alam, both student leaders, were killed in police firing on town’s Ram Babu Road on November 28, 1990 when anti-Ershed movement took its peak.
Firoj was the joint-convener of Biplobi Chhatra Sangha, Mymensingh unit, while Jahangir was the secretary of JSD Chhatra League at Mymensingh Poly Technique Institute, sources said.
Marking the day, Shahid Firoj-Jahangir Smriti parishad organised a day-long programme, including a mourning rally, placing of wreaths at Shahid Faroj-Jahangir Square and a discussion meeting.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal, Bangladesh Samajtantrik Dal, and Chhatra Union joined the day’s programme.
A discussion meeting on life and sacrifice of the martyrs was held at Shahid Firoj-Jahangir Square in the town. The speakers said the trial of the killers of two heroes, who sacrificed their lives for restoration of democracy, is yet to be ensured even after 25 years.“We are in deep frustration as the state has not taken initiative to ensure the trial of the killers,” said the speakers.
“It gives us pain as we remember the glorious sacrifice of two heroes; but their killers are yet to be punished,” they said. They also urged the government to evaluate the sacrifices of the two student leaders for the country's movement for democracy.
