Hasina, Ershad to pick candidates

BNP empowers Shahjahan

Hasina, Ershad to pick candidates

The three major political parties, Awami League, Bangladesh Nationalist Party and Jatiya Party yesterday sent names of persons who will have the power to nominate mayoral candidates in the municipal polls to the Election Commission.
EC sources said Awami League president Sheikh Hasina will nominate mayoral candidates from her party, while joint secretary general of the BNP Mohammad Shahjahan will have the power to nominate party candidates and Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad will nominate his party's candidates.
Representatives of these political parties yesterday submitted letters to the EC with the names of persons having the power to nominate mayoral candidates.
This is the first time such measures have been taken by the EC, as the municipal elections will be held with party symbols for the first time. Yesterday was the last date for sending names of persons having the power to nominate mayoral candidates.
After submitting the name with sample signatures of the JP chairman, its joint secretary general, Nurul Islam, told  journalists that the JP will nominate mayoral candidates for all 236 municipalities with the party symbol.  Some other parties, like the Communist Party of Bangladesh, Biblobi Communist Party, Jatiya Party (Monju), JASAD (Inu), the National People’s Party, Islami Andolon and Bikalpadhara also submitted names of persons having nomination power.

Earlier, the Election Commission sent letters to all 40 registered political parties with the directive to send names and sample signatures of persons who will nominate mayoral candidates.
However, EC sources said the other political parties may get some time to submit names of persons who will nominate candidates to take part under the political banner.
A delegation that included BNP publication secretary Imran Saleh Prince yesterday submitted a letter to the EC with several demands. These are announcement of a new poll schedule after deferring the municipal elections by 15 days, stopping of mass arrest of its leaders and workers, releasing of its leaders and workers, transfer of upazila nirbahi officers and officers-in-charge of police stations before the elections, ensuring a level playing field and including around 50 lakh new voters waiting to be enlisted.
