A man was killed and two others were injured as a timber-laden trawler capsized after being hit by a launch in the Lohalia River in Sadar upazila early yesterday. The deceased was identified as Jamal Gazi, 38, an inhabitant of Shutabaria village in Golachipa upazila. Police quoting the two injured—Miraj Mridha and Faku—said their trawler remained anchored for dense fog on the river. However, passenger launch ‘MV Eagle-3’ hit the stationary trawler at around 4:30am while the three were sleeping on board the trawler. As a result, the trawler broke apart into several pieces and capsized in the river. Miraj and Faku managed to swim ashore, but Jamal went missing.
Later, locals recovered his body from the river at around 7:30am. On information, police visited the spot and sent the body to hospital morgue for an autopsy, said Officer-in-charge of Patuakhali Sadar police Tarikul Islam.
Miraj and Faku with injuries have been sent to Patuakhali Medical College Hospital, the OC added.
