Curtain rises on fourth edition of mega event today

The fourth edition of the much-anticipating five-day long classical music festival in the country titled ‘Bengal Classical Music Festival (BCMF) 2015’ will see its curtain rise today at Army Stadium in the capital. This year’s festival has been dedicated to late noted artist Qayyum Chowdhury, who passed away last year after falling unconscious while addressing BCMF 2014 at the same venue. Square presents BCMF 2015 is being organised by Bengal Foundation, supported by Brac Bank and powered by Robi, Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith will inaugurate the festival as the chief guest, while Cultural Affairs Minister Asaduzzaman Noor will be present as special guest. Besides, Bengal Foundation Chairman Abul Khair, Square Toiletries Ltd Managing Director Anjan Chowdhury, Brac Bank Limited Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Selim RF Hussain and Robi Axiata Limited Chief Operating Officer Mahtab Uddin Ahmed will also be present as special guests at the event.
The five-day long festival is featuring all major proponents of classical music from Bangladesh and India. Among the Bangladeshi artistes, Yusuf Khan, Dr Asit Ray and his team, Warda Rihab, Muhammad Bhubon, Fahmida Naznin, Susmita Debnath Suchi and Abhijit Kundu will perform in the festival. Internationally-acclaimed artistes like Pandit Hariprasad Chaurasia, Pandit Shivkumar Sharma, Pandit Ulhas N Kashalkar, Ustad Rashid Khan, Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, Rahul Sharma, Kaushiki Chakraborty, Uday Bhawalkar and Sameehan Kashalkar, among others, will take part in the festival.
Moreover, veteran Indian tabla player Zakir Hussain, who won the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan Award, and Indian Carnatic vocalist Padma Vibhushan Balamurali Krishna will also perform in the festival.
Today, on the opening day of the festival, the event will kick off with a Bharatnatyam dance performance by Pallabi Dance Centre. Other segments of the day include Tabla Kirtan by Bengal Parampara Sangeetalay, Carnatic flute by Jayaprada Ramamurthy, Dhrupad by Music Department of Rajshahi University, Santoor by Rahul Sharma, Khayal by Kaushiki Chakraborty, Sitar by Pandit Kushal Das and Carnatic music by Bidushi Bombay Jayashri.
The festival will run everyday from 7pm to 5:10am, until December 1. l
