Mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Annisul Huq yesterday said a bus service exclusively for women will be introduced in the capital soon, aiming to reduce their sufferings, reports UNB. “Some 3,000 new passenger buses will hit the city streets in the coming years…transport owners have already asked to launch a separate bus service for women,” he told the inaugural session of a programme marking the ‘Prevention of Violence against Women Fortnightly’.
ActionAid Bangladesh organised the function at Banani Club ground in the capital in the morning. Speaking as the chief guest, Annisul Huq said there are many laws here which have ensured the adequate security of women, but they suffer from insecurity for poor enforcement of the laws. He stressed the need for taking stern action against those involved in violence against women and ensuring adequate security for them. “But, we should work together to tackle violence against women and avert all kinds of harassment they face during their movement,” the mayor said. Women for Women executive member Salma Khan, women leader Khushi Kabir, chairman of Dhaka University’s Law Department Shahnaz Huda and ActionAid BangladeshED Farah Kabir, among others, spoke on the occasion.
