Bangladesh, India ink SOP to operate coastal ships

STAFF REPORTER

The government has given importance to the maritime sector as per directives of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, said Shipping Secretary Shafique Alam Mehdi yesterday.
“Development of the maritime sector is visible. Our ships are operating in coastal areas. We are implementing development projects, maintaining transparency and honesty,” Shafique told leaders of the Shipping Reporters’ Forum Bangladesh (SRFB) at the Secretariat.
Bangladesh has signed a SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) with India to operate coastal ships, he said, adding that cargo ships could now operate in Bangladesh-India coastal areas. “Cargo ships loaded with goods from India’s eastern ports can operate directly with Chittagong port while Bangladeshi cargo ships can operate with Indian ports too as per the agreement,” said Shafique
