Campaign to stop violence against women launched

UNB

A 16-day campaign against gender-based violence was launched by Zonta Club of Greater Dhaka on Wednesday to mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, reports UNB. Zonta Club of Greater Dhaka is a platform of women professionals and rights activists. The campaign began with a seminar at Platinum Suites Hotel in Banani area. Issues like sexual abuse against children, gender-based violence in schools and exploitation through cyber crimes were discussed in the seminar, in line with the theme of this year’s global 16-day campaign -- ‘From Peace in the Home to Peace in the World’.
Chaired by the Club’s president Maliha Chaudhury, the seminar was addressed by children’s rights activist Mayeeda Chowdhury, Area Director (Area-2) of the Club Dr Rubina Hossain, Zontian (member of the club) Tehmina Enayet and cyber crime specialist Maj (retd) Kazi Ahmad Pervez.
Moderated by Zontian Farzana Ali, the seminar was also attendant by the Club’s governor (District-25) Fahmida. Talking about sexual abuse of children, Mayeeda Chowdhury said, “It’s high time to say ‘no’ to sexual abuse of children… We don’t feel comfort to talk about it, because this violence happens inside our home.”  “It is committed towards the children by people whom we trust and who have access inside our homes and inside our private life,” she said. Mayeeda urged mothers to create the space so that the children can discus about sexual abuse with them. Making a presentation on the cyber crimes, Kazi Ahmad Pervez placed a number of suggestions for those who are subjected to cyber crimes.
The suggestions include taking punitive measures, understanding threats, taking counter steps and knowing about the remedies. Dr Rubina stressed the need for teaching children how to protect themselves from sexual abuse.
She also advised that women or girls should not share the password of their e-mail and social networking sites with their boy friends and partners. As part of the campaign, the club will implement a unique programme under which children from prominent schools in the capital will teach underprivileged children in other schools. The Club has arranged various programmes during the campaign that will continue till December 10, the World Human Rights Day.
