Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia has alleged that a one-party authoritarian rule has gripped the country, pushing democracy to brink of destruction.
“Democracy is now almost dead after the January 5 voter-less elections,” said the BNP chief in a statement yesterday ahead of Shaheed Dr Milon Day to be observed in the country today (Friday), marking the 25th death anniversary of physician Shamsul Alam Khan Milon.
Dr Milon was killed on this day in 1990 near the TSC of Dhaka University by the armed cadres allegedly belonging to Jatiya Party led by the then autocratic ruler HM Ershad, who is now the main opposition in parliament and an ally of the ruling Awami League.
“The spirit of multiparty democracy has been demolished. The spirit of the liberation war is in a dire condition. The greed of the ruling regime has pushed the country and the nation towards deep crisis.”
She said there was no alternative to restoring democracy in the country to ensure that the empowerment of the people, in order to overcome the crisis.
“Forging a unity to this end is a must. Let us unite to make the sacrifice of Dr Milon meaningful.”
Dr Milon was the joint secretary of Bangladesh Medical Association. The attackers were out to foil the brewing mass upsurge that soon ousted dictator Ershad.
