A court in Bogra sentenced a man to death yesterday for killing his seven months pregnant wife for dowry in 2000.
The convict is Md Bappi Mia, 37, of Hatilapur village in the upazila.
SM Saiful Islam, judge of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Court-1, pronounced the verdict.
The court acquitted Bappi’s mother Arefa Begum, brother Pappu Mia and sister-in-law Rani Begum as the charges brought against them could not be proved.
According to the prosecution, Bappi Mia killed his wife Kohinur Begum, 20, following an altercation over dowry on the night of June 15, 2000 and dumped the body in a nearby pond.Police recovered the body next day. The victim’s father Md Abul Hossain Fakir filed a case with Bogra Sadar police station on the day accusing four including the convicts. Police submitted a charge sheet on November 10, 2000. Yesterday the court gave the verdict in the case after 15 years of litigation.
Special public prosecutor of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Court-1 advocate Noresh Mukharjee conducted the case as prosecutor.
