Among MADHOUSE production’s exceptional pieces of work, Monster is considered to be one of the best. Ranked 33 in Myanimelist, Monster is a must watch. Those who liked Death Note, will surely like this anime. Throughout the 74 episodes, as the story unravels, the thrill is enough to keep the viewers on the edge of their seats. Even though the anime is 74 episodes long, there are no fillers and thanks to MADHOUSE the anime stays true to the manga.
Adapted from Naoki Urasawa’s manga of the same name, the story revolves around Kenzo Tenma, a genius Japanese surgeon working in post-Cold War Germany. He comes under suspicion of a murder and flees the authorities and sets on a journey to find the antagonist and clear his name. The story may seem to start like those cliché storylines but the masterful storytelling puts Monster on its own level. Not a single scene is wasted and every piece of information is significant. The dark theme of the storyline is beautifully maintained throughout the narration. The subplots were beautifully placed and the character development was a work of excellence. This anime has one of the best antagonists in all anime. We can rarely find anime of this length with such a good storytelling and style.
After ten years of its production the animation may seem old. But it was surely a superb work at that time. The dark nature of the story was quite skillfully maintained with the quality of animation. Some drawings were so good, the viewers will remember it long after watching the series. The music may not be that catchy but the opening and ending music is suitable for its theme. The voice acting of this anime has been an excellent work. Specially, the voice of the main antagonist, Johan Liebert, was brilliant. As the story is set in Germany I personally preferred watching the dubbed version and it was rather good.
Overall, Monster is a complete work. Without any inconsistency in the story and its all-round excellence, Monster has the potential to become one of your benchmarks. If you have yet to see Monster, you are sure missing out one of the very best.
