The Detective Branch of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested an activist of the Jamaat-e-Islami for allegedly threatening several eminent persons by sending them messages on their cellphone. The person was identified as Abdul Haque of Sunamganj. He is a madrasa teacher in Sylhet.
Muntasirul Islam Rony, Deputy Commissioner (media) of the DMP, said Haque was picked up from the Tejgaon area of the city early on Tuesday.
At a press briefing, Detective Branch Joint Commissioner Monirul Islam said Haque's group sent death threats to some 153 eminent citizens, including agriculture minister Matia Chowdhury, Professor Emeritus Dr Anisuzzaman, Professor Muntasir Mamun, Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee leader Shahriar Kabir and Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal.
The threats were sent by manipulating mobile phone numbers of three people with whom Haque had previous enmity. This was done so that the three would get into trouble, said DB officials.
On September 29, 2015, he sent the text "Stop publishing malicious reportages against the oppressed Uyghur Muslims or we will stop your heartbeat forever" to the cellphone number 01713067586 of Mizanur Rahman Khan of the daily, Prothom Alo.
