Institute for burn patients on cards

BSS

Aimed at building skilled manpower and offering better services to the burn patients, the government has launched a project to establish Institute of National Burn and Plastic Surgery, reports BSS.
The world standard institute would plan to provide treatment to nearly 1.5 lakh burn patients as well as produce over 15 to 20 specialists annually, said officials of planning ministry.
Talking about the project, planning minister A H M Mustafa Kamal said the government would turn the institute into a "centre of excellence" for burn and plastic surgery treatment in the country as well as a most modern centre in the subcontinent.
Mentioning that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in her government's first tenure in 1996-2001 had introduced a 50-bed burn and plastic surgery department at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), he said: "Considering the increased necessity and treatment facilities for the burn patients, the government has taken the decision of setting up the institute".
The 500-bed National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery will be set up on 1.76 acres of land in capital's Chankharpul, adjacent to DMCH, involving Taka 522 crore. The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Tuesday cleared the project for implementation by December 2018. The Department of Health is entrusted with implementation of the project.
Ministry officials said the main objectives of the project are to provide developed burn and plastic surgery services with an affordable cost, building skilled manpower in the burn and plastic surgery issues through post graduation course and short-term training, conducting awareness programme on burn and plastic surgery.
Officials said nearly 6 lakh people including women and children suffer from burn injuries annually across the country. Specialist physicians and trained staffs are needed to provide them treatment, but the country at this moment only has 52 specialist physicians against the necessity of nearly 1,500 to treat the burn patients properly.
Presently some 50,000 burn patients are receiving treatment per year from specialists.
Currently, some students are getting opportunities to do post-graduation at DMCH and FCPS at Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons (BCPS) on burn and plastic surgery annually.
