Tk 8,000cr deal inked with JICA

The government has signed a deal worth Tk 8,000 crore with Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) for the construction of three bridges and a flyover on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, yesterday.
Chief engineer of the roads and highways department, M Firoz Iqbal, and Genta Tabe, signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organisation, in the presence of road transport and bridges minister, Obaidul Quader, at a city hotel.
Among others, lawmakers Shamim Osman and Nazmul Huq Prodhan, Japan’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Masato Watanabe, road transport and bridges secretary, MAN Siddique, JICA chief representative to Bangladesh, Mikio Hataeda, and project director Saidul Huq were present, during the signing ceremony.
Kanchpur, Meghna and Gumti second bridges, including a flyover at Kanchpur, will be constructed, with the financial assistance from JICA. “The Dhaka-Chittagong highway is the lifeline of the country’s economy. We hope the bridges and the flyover will be opened to vehicular movement, by 2018,” Obaidul Quader told reporters, after signing the agreement.
The pressure on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway is increasing, after developing it into four lanes, the minister said, adding, “The existing capacity of the Kanchpur, Meghna and Gumti bridges have already been crossed. Considering the reality, three new bridges are needed. The three existing bridges will also be repaired, with the financial assistance from JICA.”
The minister said Tk. 8,000 crore will be needed to complete the project. Of this, JICA will provide Tk. 6,000 crore, he added. “Highest levels of transparency will be ensured during implementation of the project,” Obaidul Quader said, in reply to a query.
The development of 158 kms, out of 192 kms on the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, into four lanes, has already been completed, the minister said.
Construction of pavement and concrete work of 168km of the highway has also been completed, and the remaining work will be completed soon, the minister said.
