Dhaka Dynamites couldn’t live up to the billings as the batsmen were smothered by a sustained bowling menace of Rangpur Riders to taste a 69-run defeat in its second match of the BPL yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium. The much-vaunted batting line up of Dhaka was shot out for 107 in 19.4 overs after Rangpur complied a respectable total of 176 for six. Another high scoring thriller was anticipated given the last couple of day’s match scenario but the Dynamites batsmen came up with poor batting show in the face of some brilliant bowling from Rangpur Riders.
Shakib Al Hasan, the world No 1 all-rounder, jolted Dynamites, claiming four for 16, his best bowling figure in BPL, which was complemented by fellow left arm spinner Arafat Sunny’s two for 15 and paceman Thisara Perera’s three for 25. While Dynamites’ fielding was not as electric as it should be, Riders didn’t make any mistakes, another aspect of the game that determined the result.
Shakib scythed down Dhaka’s top order in the space of just three balls, removing two openers-Shamsur Rahman Shuvo and Nasir Jamshed who couldn’t give the start what it should be in pursuit of a big chase. As the side was reeling to a precarious 15 for two, Arafat Sunny further rattled the batting line up, dismissing Mosaddek Hossain Saikat and Dhaka’s batting stalwart Kumar Sangakkara. One of the greats of the game, Sangakkara’s dismissal came as a huge blow in Dhaka’s aspiration. Sangakkara just got his eye in and made him settled when he tried to slog-sweep Sunny but failed to connect it well. He scored 29 off 28 with three boundaries.
His dismissal left Dhaka a further troublesome 53 for four in 11th over and the match was effectively over. Only some mad batting from Ryan Ten Doeschate and Nasir Hossain could create a miracle. Doeschate had the history of batting with such madness and that’s why Dhaka fans pinned a hope on him. But just one over later after Sangakkara’s dismissal, Thisara Perera got him to send a message that there would be no miracle. The rest of the batsmen including Nasir Hossain just huffed and puffed to take the score past 100. After being failure in two successive matches, Lendl Simmons finally got his mojo and gave the Riders a solid start by hitting 51 off 39, including five fours and three sixes. Mohammad Mithun and Thisara Perera held together the innings in the middle overs to keep Riders on course of a big total.
Mithun made 34 off 22, clattering two sixes and three fours while Perera struck 20 ball-27, studded with two fours and as many sixes. Dynamites resisted the run flow, dismissing both of them in a short space but Shakib took the side to a position of dominance hitting an unbeaten 24 off 15, designed with three fours. Leg-spinner Yasir Shah and fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman snapped up two wickets apiece. It was Rangpur’s second victory in third matches after they won against Chittagong Vikings by two wickets and lost to Barisal Bulls by 13 runs. Dynamites secured a six-wicket win over Comilla Victorians in the first match.

Shakib Al Hasan holds the second best T20 bowling figure what came in Caribbean Premier League (CPL). His six for six against Trinidad & Tobago Red Steel for Barbados Tridents was only second to little…
