Ex-Viqarunnisa teacher Parimal jailed for life

A Dhaka court yesterday sentenced expelled Viqarunnisa Noon School and College teacher, Parimal Joydhar, to life imprisonment on charges of having raped one of his female students four-and-a-half years ago. Parimal however continued to maintain he is innocent, said court sources.
Judge Saleh Uddin Ahmed of the Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal yesterday afternoon delivered the sentence four-and-a-half years after the sensational rape. The tribunal fined Parimal Tk. 50,000 and he will have to stay an additional six months in jail by default. Parimal claimed innocence and said, “I had successfully passed the 29th BCS examination and was going to be a magistrate but this verdict has destroyed my life totally. The prosecution could not prove a single allegation against me. Though I respect the verdict, I will definitely appeal against it after consulting my lawyer.”

As per statement of the case, Parimal, on May 28, 2011, raped the girl at his private coaching centre in the city, taking video footage of the incident on his cell phone. He then threatened the girl that he would publish the photos and footage on the Internet if she tried telling anyone. On June 17 the same year, Parimal allegedly raped the girl again. At one stage, the victim even submitted a written allegation against him to the Principal however former Principal Hosne Ara Begum, along with some teachers, tried to save him.
After several days of protests by students and guardians however, on July 5, 2011, the governing body of the school terminated Parimal’s services. On the same day, the victim’s father filed a case with Badda police station, accusing Parimal, Hosne Ara and Lutfur Rahman - head of the school’s Bashundhara branch. On July 7, 2011, the detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Parimal from his sister’s house in Keraniganj on the city’s outskirts. On July 11 the same year, he gave a confessional statement before the court. On August 11, 2011, Inspector Mohammad Shahadat Hossain, Officer-in-Charge of Badda police station and Investigation Officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet to the court. However, he dropped the names of Hosne and Lutfur. Hosne later resigned as Principal, while Lutfur was removed from his position. On March 7, 2012, the court finally framed charges against Parimal.
