Amu leaves for Vienna
Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu left Dhaka yesterday for Vienna in Austria to attend the sixth ministerial conference of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs).
The two-day conference will start today. It will adopt a work plan for inclusive and sustainable industrial development of the LDCs aimed at achieving the United Nations (UN) target of sustainable development, an official release said. The minister is scheduled to return home on December 5.
US embassy remains closed today
The US Embassy in Dhaka, including the Consular Section, will remain closed today on the occasion of Thanksgiving Day, an American national holiday.
The American Centre with the Archer K Blood American Centre Library and the EducationUSA Student Advising Centre will also remain closed, said a press release yesterday. However, emergency services for American citizens will be available.
N’ganj ex- sub-registrar sued
The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday filed a case against a former sub-registrar of Narayanganj for allegedly accumulating illegal wealth.
ACC deputy director Helal Uddin Sharif filed the case against former sub-registrar of Rupganj Sheikh Hasan Ali with Ramna Police Station in the capital on Tuesday afternoon, ACC public relations officer Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told UNB. According to first information report (FIR), Hasan Ali amassed illegal wealth worth around Tk 1.25 crore.
The ACC probe found that the former sub-registrar had given false information of about Tk 69 lakh in his wealth statement he earlier submitted to the Commission, and accumulated illegal wealth worth Tk 56 lakh, which is contrary to his income.
Schoolgirl commits suicide
A schoolgirl allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling of her room at Jayfarpur village in Sylhet on Tuesday.
The deceased was Jaheda Begum, 13, a class VII student of Gowalabazar High School of the area.Sub-inspector of Osmaninagar police station Anuj Kanti Das said being informed by family members, police recovered the hanging body of Jaheda from her room around 1.30pm. The reason behind the suicide could not be known.
