Keeping the importance of players’ fitness level in mind, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has designed a guideline for maintaining a basic level of fitness and conditioning as well as mental health of cricketers who are at isolation following the nationwide shut down due to Covid-19 pandemic.
As the spread of the coronavirus accelerated across the world including Bangladesh, the sports landscape has consequently altered significantly, from playing games behind closed doors to canceling events and putting leagues on temporary suspension.
In response to the pandemic the BCB, as a precautionary measure, also postponed all sorts of cricketing activities including domestic tournaments and preparation campaign for an indefinite period of time in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
“The BCB is mindful of the challenges the cricketers will face when they return to the field and the guideline has been prepared as a priority. The exercise instructions from the BCB’s Head of Physical Performance Nick Lee are easy to follow at home even if someone does not have access to fitness equipment or a gym,” the BCB said through a press release issued Wednesday.
“The national team players have been given a specialised programme. A general guideline and day by day work-out plan is available to all cricketers through the Board’s official digital platforms. A sudden return to cricket after a prolonged lay off raises risks of injury. That is why the Board expects the players to make the best use of this initiative,” the statement further read.
“The Board also acknowledges the need for mental support during these difficult times. Accordingly, the BCB medical team has developed a Mental Health document for the players which is also accessible on the BCB’s official website and facebook page.”
The BCB, meanwhile, circulated a 8-point mental guideline for players to follow during the lockdown which include- making new routine, mediation and prayer, reading books and spending time with favourite activities, gym, eating nutritious foods, talking with friends via phone or video calls, staying away from social media and news feeds and less use of electronic devices such as computers, mobile, television etc.
The Board also outlined a week long physical activities in its online platform for players to stay fit during isolating them at home.
While athletes throughout the world are aiming to keep upbeat and focused amid the coronavirus outbreak, players like Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad among many others already conducting individual practice sessions at home in a regular basis maintaining their fitness level.
