The finance ministry has issued a directive to the Bangladesh Bank (BB), asking it to take action against all financial institutions with links to the Jamaat-e-Islami.
The ministry’s Bank and Financial Institutions Division issued a letter to the BB governor on Sunday, after Jamaat secretary general Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mujahid was executed for his involvement in crimes against humanity in the 1971 Liberation War.
Motivated by the information received from the home ministry, the finance ministry also asked the governor to clamp down on all service-providing entities, educational institutions and any other organisations operated by the Jamaat.
The move came amid demands from different organisations and political parties to get tough on all financial institutions having links to the Jamaat-e-Islami, which was described as a ‘criminal party’ by the war crimes tribunal. The party is widely believed to have made investments in services, trade, education, transport and media.
A 216-page annexure was also sent with the letter signed by Md Rizwanul Huda, deputy secretary, ministry of finance.
The government, however, did not specify the nature and manner of actions it wanted against the Jamaat institutions.
