Mashrafe Bin Mortaza rode on luck and pluck to steer Comilla Victorians secure its first victory in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) when they trounced Chittagong Vikings by seven wickets yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
He survived twice on his way to a marauding 56 not out off 32, which drove Comilla get over the line with seven balls to spare after Vikings put up a respectable 176 for four.
In his career best knock, Mashrafe was reprieved twice on 15 and 34 when Asif Ahmed Ratul and Chamara Kapugedara put down the catches off Saeed Ajmal and Shafiul Islam. But that shouldn’t gloss off the credit from Mashrafe who showed an audacious batting in the wake of consecutive second defeat of his side.
In pursuit of seemingly a tough target, Victorians who lost their first match to Dhaka Dynamites by six wickets, were reeled to a precarious 54 for three and a defeat was staring at them. Mashrafe combined for 123 with Marlon Samuels, a BPL fourth wicket record, to seal the deal.
He smashed three sixes and four fours, last of which against Mohammad Amir ensured Victorians victory. The partnership broke the record of 118, previously held by Rangpur Riders’ Niall O’Brein and Nasir Hossain who did it against Dhaka Gladiators in 2013 BPL.
Mashrafe’s heroic made all things secondary but Marlon Samuels’s effort shouldn’t be forgotten. He was indeed the unsung hero of the match and remained not out on 69, smashing eight fours and one six in his 52 balls knock.
Coming to bat with Victorians at 10 for two, Samuels steadied the innings with his serene approach. He resisted further rot, dealing with the rejuvenated Chittagong bowling with utmost skill and occasional boldness that helped Shuvagata Hom playing with freedom.
Shuvagata made 30 off 16, hitting four fours and two sixes before he was undone Shafiul Islam. Tilkaratne Dilshan had to take a blinder, running backward to complete the catch. Such was Chittagong’s intensity at one phase but as Samules and Mashrafe were batting, they seemed to be clueless in fielding. Some misfielding firstly helped Mashrafe settle his nerve and then when he started plundering the bowlers, without caring anything, Chittagong further helped him by putting down a couple of catches.
Samuels was also reprieved once when he was on 57. Shafiul was the unlucky bowler for the second time in the match when he banged one short which only Samuels could top-edge. Kamrul Islam Rabbi failed to hold on it at long-off in a moment when the match was still in the balance.
Amir was again the bowler for Chittagong to make most impact, taking two for 27.
Chittagong’s batting however was as usual compact. For the third consecutive time, they scored nearly 180, thanks to an initial and death overs blitz but couldn’t prevent them from the second loss in third match. In the last two matches, they had to go the final ball for the result but the shoddy fielding and catching effort denied them this time to take the match into the last over.
However Tamim again dazzled but this time Dilshan led the attack with 36 off 21. Tamim made 31 off 29 as the opening pair added 63 runs in just seven overs. Victorians Pakistan recruit Ashar Zaidi helped the side claw back dismissing both of them in his consecutive two overs. Some good bowling effort then kept Chittagong batsmen at bay but Ziaur Rahman came up with his big hitting prowess in the slog overs smacking an unbeaten 39 off 16 to help the side reach a respectable target. Anamul Haque Bijoy was also not out on 39.
