Thin movement marks 4th day of closure

The fourth day of the government announced 10-day closure to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19) passed yesterday with limited movement of people and vehicles as a precautionary measure to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.  Compared to the last three days, the fourth day of the lockdown witnessed some mobility of people. Vehicles like CNG-run auto-rickshaws and pedal rickshaws were seen plying in some districts, including the capital. Law enforcers and members of the armed forces were seen patrolling the streets. They instructed people to maintain the required social distance amid the evolving situation. The Dhaka Metropolitan Shop Owners’ Association extended the closure period for shops and shopping malls to April 4. Earlier, it had announced the closure of shops till March 31 as part of the measures to minimise the spread of the coronavirus.

Association president Towfiq Ehsan issued a statement yesterday, urging all shop and mall owners in the capital to keep their businesses closed till April 4 as per the government’s directives. He also requested affluent businessmen to stand by the poor in their localities during the crisis and urged everyone to stay home.

All enterprises are closed at this time other than essential services like banking, hospitals, and medical stores. Some customers visited banks in the capital, but the transaction volumes were low, bank officials in Matijheel said.

According to reports from various districts, law enforcers have been carrying out their duties, telling people not to gather together anywhere and to stay at home.

The Army has been aiding the civil administration by closely monitoring those placed in home-quarantine. In Feni, the Army and the police spread awareness by distributing masks among locals, including rickshaw pullers, on various roads of the district. The Army also distributed masks and soap among low-income groups. In Noakhali, the district administration, the Army, the police, and the district health department are closely observing those placed in quarantine.  Divisional cities like Rajshahi, Khulna, Rangpur, Barishal, Chattogram, and Sylhet also witnessed limited movement of people. However, the movement of people and vehicles has increased to some extent.
