Less than one-tenth of the people who have returned from abroad are observing home quarantine, while the rest are endangering others in the Barishal Division.
Yamin Chowdhury, Barishal divisional commissioner, disclosed that over 10,300 expatriates returned from abroad to different areas fewer than six districts of Barishal division till mid-March but less than one-tenth of them were undergoing home quarantine.
Dr Basudeb Das, Barishal divisional director of health, said among the 10,000 people who returned home from abroad in the six districts of the division, only 1,057 persons were in home quarantine, while one suspected corona-infected person was undergoing treatment at an isolation ward of the Barguna General Hospital.
This number was 764 on Friday, 409 on Thursday, 394 on Wednesday and 90 on Tuesday. Among the 1,057 home quarantined people of the division, till Saturday noon, 7 were in Barishal city, 201 in Bhola, 186 in Barguna, 177 in Barishal, 184 in Pirojpur, 121 in Jhalakathi, 179 in Patuakhali district, the divisional health director said. A corona-suspected patient at the Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital had been released as he tested negative.
Besides 65, including 14 inhabitants of Barishal, 17 of Barguna, 20 of Patuakhali, 5 of Pirojpur, 9 of Jhalakathi ended their quarantine period and, at the time of writing this report, no one was reported to be COVID-19-infected.
The director of health said stern measures were being taken against those violating the quarantine rules. “The district administration is operating mobile courts. We have prepared 384 beds in six district and 135 in Barishal city to serve the patients,” he added. Ziaur Rahman, executive magistrate of the Barishal district administration, said, “We are holding mobile courts against those violating the self-quarantine system. We have already fined Tk 15,000 in Ward No. 19 and Tk 5,000 in Ward No. 29 of the city on Friday for violating the rules.”
He also said mobile courts were held with the help of law enforcers and local government representatives at Ramkathi of Syestabad union under Sadar Upazila to stop a feast at a Sunnat-E-Khatna (circumcision ceremony) and a gathering at marriage ceremony at Charaicha village.
Anup Das, assistant commissioner (land) of Banaripara upazila of the district, operating a mobile court at Solia-Bakpur, fined a Jordan expatriate Tk 5,000 and asked his brother and another person of Banaripara, who had returned Spain, to be in home quarantine. SM Ajiar Rahman, Barishal deputy commissioner, urged consumers not to purchase essential commodities in excess of their daily usual needs and warned businessmen not to hike prices.
On other hand doctors of the Sher-E-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH) handed over a memorandum to Dr Abdur Razzak, deputy director of the hospital, demanded Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to ensure safety against from corona virus infection. Dr Sudip Halder, president Anto Bivag-Chikitsok Parishad' said they were treating patients with anxiety in the absence of PPE. One person was admitted to the isolation unit of the Barishal SBMCH on Friday on the suspicion of coronavirus infection. Dr Bakir Hossain, director, SBMCH, disclosed that Shahidul Islam, 24, a resident of Vashanchar area under Mehendiganj upazila of Barishal, was a waiter at a Dhaka restaurant.
He complained of throat and chest pain. The attending physician admitted him after a preliminary primary examination to the Corona Isolation Unit (CIU) of the hospital on Friday evening, the SBMCH director added. Rafikul, brother Shahidul, said that his brother came back home three days ago. He was brought him to the SBMCH Friday after his condition deteriorated on Friday afternoon.
Our Rangpur correspondent adds: Seven hundred sixty-four people are living in home quarantine in eight districts of Rangpur Division for the past few days.
In the last 24 hours on Saturday, 144 were put in home quarantine in the Rangpur Division, Dr Amin Ahamed, director, health, Rangpur Division, told the media.
BSS adds from Khulna: A total of 438 overseas returnees were sent to keep in home quarantine in nine upazilas and two metropolis of the district till March 22 to prevent further spread of coronavirus.
Of them, a total of 175 overseas returnees have gone on home quarantine in last 24 hours and as many as 17 overseas returnees were released as they maintained the condition of staying home quarantine for 14 days, said an officials of Khulna Civil surgeon office here yesterday.
