The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has decided to postpone all forms of cricket for an indefinite period as a precautionary measure to check the COVID-19 pandemic, which has caused havoc all over the world and has brought sporting activities across the globe to a grinding halt.

BCB President Nazmul Hassan Papon made this disclosure while talking to reporters on the SBNCS premises in Mirpur yesterday. The BCB chief also insisted that no cricket would take place in the country until further notice as the board wants to keep the players safe from the coronavirus outbreak.

With this announcement, the Bangabandhu Dhaka Premier League’s (DPL’s) fate has been decided with immediate effect. The BCB had earlier postponed the league after the first round of play. “You all know that all kinds of sporting activities across the world have been terminated on account of the coronavirus outbreak. Our cricket has also been suspended, especially the DPL, which we had earlier postponed after the first round. We had taken that immediate decision to assess the situation as it develops. After holding discussions with all, it is understood that the situation is gradually changing. Earlier the players and the clubs wanted to continue play, but as the days progressed, different opinions have come in. Based on everything, we’ve decided to postpone all kinds of cricket until further notice,” Hasan said.

“We’ll monitor the situation at the same time. If the situation improves or if we find any playable conditions, we’ll announce the date later on. This is the main agenda of our meeting,” he added.

The BCB chief also said that it was highly unlikely that the Dhaka Premier League would resume anytime soon. “It’s difficult to say when DPL will resume because the situation is constantly changing. We’ve no idea whether the conditions will deteriorate or not. So, I cannot announce the specific date, and there’s no chance that DPL will begin before April 15. The start might be delayed further,” the BCB chief added, saying that the current situation is not perfect for playing cricket.

“As far as I know, before the tournament kicks off, all the players and clubs were given cautionary instructions. We’ll continue briefing them like that if everyone remains aware of it. They need to stay safe,” Hasan said of players’ safety.

Hasan also talked about the Sanjay Bangar issue. It was earlier reported that the BCB was keen to sign Bangar as the national team’s Test batting consultant but the Indian player turned it down yesterday, according to an Indian media report.

“The time hasn’t come yet to talk on the issue. It might happen he rejected the offer. We’re communicating with four or five candidates and the discussion is still going on. It’s not possible to deal with everyone’s terms and conditions,” Hassan observed.  Hassan also voiced concern about Tigers’ future overseas tour, saying that no play will take part in the near future if the situation persists in this manner.
