Treatment plants to be installed to check Buriganga water pollution

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday said treatment plants will be installed at the threshold of drainages to check water pollution of Buriganga River. At the beginning of Mujib Barsha celebration, treatment plants are being set up at the mouth of drainages to treat polluted water that flow into Buriganga River, he said while inaugurating the installation of the treatment plants and clean-up campaign on the bank of Buriganga at Sadarghat in the capital.
The state minister said a pilot project has been undertaken for installation of the treatment plants. If the pilot project is successful, then the government will undertake a large project in this regard, he said. So far two treatment plants were set up under the pilot project involving Tk 13 lakh, he said. Talking about clean-up campaign, Khalid Mahmud said the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) together with Dhaka WASA and Dhaka City Corporation will work for cleaning polluted water.
About the outbreak of Covid-19, he said BIWTA distributed leaflets to raise public awareness over Coronavirus. The state minister asked people to avoid unnecessary travels and tours in the wake of coronavirus outbreak, said a PID handout.
