Special JS session Sunday to mark Mujib birth centenary

STAFF REPORTER, Dhaka

The Bangladesh Jatiya Sangsad will hold a special session on Sunday to mark the birth centenary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Over 200 guests, including foreign diplomats based in Dhaka, are expected to attend the special session, scheduled to start at 11:00am. However, no foreign delegate will join the great event marking ‘Mujib Year’ in view of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

The Parliament Secretariat has made preparations to make the event a memorable one, setting an example for the world. As part of precautionary measures for the coronavirus, Parliament has postponed some of its year-long programmes, including children's gatherings and cycle rally. Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, who will preside over the session, expressed hope that it would set an example before the world.

The Chief Justice, chiefs of the three armed forces,

advisers to the Prime Minister, foreign diplomats, members of the advisory committee of the Awami League, and representatives of civil society are expected to attend the programme.

President Abdul Hamid is expected to deliver a speech on the life and work of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, while lawmakers from both the treasury and opposition benches would take part in a general discussion for 12-14 hours.

The Speaker said opposition lawmakers, including those belonging to the BNP, will get an opportunity to take part in the discussion.

Besides, lawmakers would throng the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi 32 at 9am on Sunday. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will first pay tribute to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing a

wreath at his portrait. She will be followed by Speaker

Dr Shirin Sharmin Chowdhury, the deputy speaker, and

other lawmakers.

In Parliament, a recording of the January 10 speech of Bangabandhu to mark his homecoming will be played.

Whip Iqbalur Rahim said besides the special session, there will be a photo and video exhibition throughout the year.
