Homage to Bangabandhu

Homage to Bangabandhu

The silent village of Tungipara in Gopalganj district of Bangladesh has been reverberated with the footsteps of millions of people from all strata of life as hundred years ago a child was born there who changed the course of history of the Bengali nation.  No other Bangali could leave such a lasting impression in the Bengali psyche as did Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Today the people of Bangladesh and the Bangladeshis living in different parts of the globe are celebrating the centenary of birth of Bangabandhu, regarded as the greatest Bengali ever.

Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman emerged as a towering personality from a middle class family. His contributions to the Bengali nation are immense.   His charisma as a leader of the masses, his thunderous voice, unflinching courage and other rare qualities endeared him to millions of people in this part of the world.

His historic 7th March speech inspired the people to fight for independence from the shackles of Pakistani rule.  Bangabandhu’s love for his people and empathy for his people’s sufferings made him strive for their freedom.

The landslide victory of the Awami League in 1970 elections made Bangabandhu  the sole spokesman of the erstwhile East Pakistan. The people gave him the absolute mandate in favour of his six-point doctrine.  It is a sheer tragedy that Bangabandhu could not rule the country for long.  Some misguided members of the army brutally killed Bangabandhu and most of the members of his family at the pre-dawn hour. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her younger sister Sheikh Rehana escaped the carnage as they were outside the country. The nation could recover gradually from the shocks and developments in the aftermath of the tragic killing without conclusively losing the goals of the Liberation War.

It is heartening that measures have been taken to correct the history of Bangladesh's struggle for freedom and the role of Bangabandhu in school textbooks. It is a move that will surely go a long way toward removing the falsehoods that have distorted our history since August 1975. The best way to show him respect is by materialising his dream for a democratic, exploitation-free and non-communal Bangladesh, by building a country where the fundamental spirit of independence is implemented and people of all caste and creed enjoy equal rights.
