Bangladesh has urged all countries to stand united in support of each other in all possible ways while addressing an enormous public health challenge put forth by the outbreak of coronavirus across the world.
“We believe that we can work together to overcome this pandemic situation sooner rather than later,” said Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen while briefing diplomats based in Dhaka at state guesthouse Padma in the capital yesterday.
“Under this pandemic situation, it is of utmost importance that all countries stand united to support each other in all possible ways in addressing this enormous public health challenge that can paralyse the whole world,” he added.
“We are sure that your respective governments and countries would also provide safety and care to our workers and people residing in your countries,” he said. “Our missions in
your countries are observing the situations closely and in constant touch with the local administration while also cooperating with them fully. We request the governments of your countries, through you, to extend necessary support to the embassies and consulates of Bangladesh in your countries so that they can perform their duties in this challenging time,” the minister said.
Momen also assured the diplomats working here that Bangladesh has taken all measures to ensure their safety and wellbeing in this difficult time as they are the ‘Honoured guests of Bangladesh’.
About the preparation of Bangladesh government with regard to Coronavirus prevention, he said, “we are providing whatever support people need in our country relating to COVID-19 irrespective of their nationality. I would like to assure you all that Bangladesh Government and its people will stand beside all our guests and support and care them as our own people and will provide any assistance they need in case of any issue related to COVID-19.”
About the Bangladesh government decision to not allow persons from Europe to enter Bangladesh for the time being as WHO has flagged Europe to be the new epicentre of the pandemic situation, he said, “We have put this measure in place purely on a temporary basis till 31st March 2020, and we will revisit the situation as it demands.”
“I would like to assure you that this measure is not applicable to persons with diplomatic passports or laissez passers posted in Bangladesh. Also, persons leaving Bangladesh for Europe can freely do so. As for foreigners staying in Bangladesh at this moment, their visas will be extended by three more months if required subject to their willingness to extend stay here,” he added.
