Members of parliament (MPs) yesterday thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her government for hanging Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid for their war crimes, reports UNB. Participating in an unscheduled discussion in parliament, the MPs praised Hasina for her firm stance on the execution of the death penalty of the two. Initiating the discussion after Magribh recess, former State Minister for Liberation War Affairs AB Tajul Islam said the country’s 16 crore people witnessed the execution of most audacious parliamentarian in the history of the country’s parliament and Jamaat leader Ali Ahsan Mujahid in the early hours of Sunday. “We thank and express gratitude to Sheikh Hasina and her government for her time-befitting decision to remove the stigma from the forehead of the nation,” he said. Commerce Minister Tofail Ahmed said Sheikh Hasina has been working to remove nation’s stigma. “I congratulate her (Hasina) from my heart for her firm conviction to establish the rule of law in the country.” Pointing her finger to the foreign community, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury said those who questioned about the trial of war criminals, where they had been when the genocide took place in 1971. Chief whip ASM Firoz said country’s people have long been waiting for the trial of war criminals. Food Minister Qamrul Islam said, “Only Sheikh Hasina can do whatever she decides for the betterment of the nation.” Information Minister Hasanul Haq Inu said Salauddin and Mujahid sought presidential clemency confessing to their war crimes. “The government did not hang any opposition leaders or Islamic leaders. Rather, convicted war criminals were executed through proper trial process.” AL MPs Sheikh Fazlul Karim Selim, Shamim Osman, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury, Abdur Rahman and Shamsul Huq Chowdhury also joined the unscheduled discussion.
