3.40cr children to be vaccinated starting from March 18

A total of 3.40 crore children aged between nine months to 10 years of age will be vaccinated across the country during the upcoming three- week ‘Measles-Rubella (MR) Vaccination Campaign- 2020’. Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque said this at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Thursday. The campaign will begin across the country from March 18 aiming to build up immunity against Measles-Rubella disease and reduce its transmission among children.

He said the first phase of the campaign will take place from March 18-24 while the second phase will begin on March 28 and continue till April 11 across the country. The minister said in the first phase of the campaign, one dose MR vaccine will be provided to students studying up to fourth grade in 1 lakh 73 thousand 2 hundred 89 schools across the country and in the second phase, MR vaccine will be provided through 2 lakh 44 thousand 4 hundred 44 regular, permanent and additional vaccination centers.

The MR Vaccination Campaign will end on April 11. Vaccination centres will remain open to the public from 8am to 4pm every day except weekly and government holidays. The minister said adding separate vaccination centers will be operated for children sleeping at the railway/bus station, staying with mothers in the hospital, living with mothers in prisons, children of the bedes, children of brothels, slum children and children living in remote areas.

Among others, Secretary of the Health Department Md. Asadul Islam, Secretary of Medical Education and Family Welfare Division Ali Noor and Director General of Health Services Dr. Abul Kalam Azad were present at the press conference. Meanwhile, Rajshahi City Corporation (RCC) has set a target to bring around 92,154 babies from nine months to below 10 years of age under measles-rubella vaccination campaign to protect them from various diseases.

 The RCC will conduct the campaign in school level from March 18 to 24 while the field level campaign will be carried out from March 28 to April 11. The decision was taken in an advocacy meeting held in City Bhaban conference hall here on Wednesday with RCC Ward Councilor Nuruzzaman Tuku in the chair.

Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) and Directorate General of Health Services supported the meeting that discussed and devised ways and means on how to make the campaign a total success collectively. In the meeting, health experts urged all concerned to make the forthcoming measles-rubella vaccination campaign a total success to save children’s lives. They unanimously underscored the need for raising public awareness to ensure immunisation to hundred per cent children to protect them from various diseases.
