Less developed countries under cancer threat

Staff Reporter

Cancer-related deaths will rise to 11 million by 2030 globally, according to Nobel laureate Dr Harold Varmus. He said the present annual toll is nine million. “Deaths caused by cancer are rising globally, especially in less developed countries,” the Nobel laureate said. He was addressing a seminar titled “A Talk by Dr Harold Varmus” at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Varmus, the winner of the 1989 Nobel Prize for Medicine and also the co-chair of President Barack Obama’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, said that taking too much tobacco, drinking alcohol and obesity were some of the factors responsible for developing cancer.
Varmus suggested to doctors that treatment against cancer should be focused on pattern, pathways and physiological changes. Omar Rahman, vice-chancellor of IUB, said, “We're trying hard to develop interaction between science and other aspects of life. Harold can be a source of inspiration for our students.” Rashed Chawdhury, chairman of IUB’s board of trustees, said, “We're fortunate to have Harold Varmus whose interest ranges from English literature to medicine in which he was awarded the Nobel Prize. His presence will surely motivate our students in expanding their knowledge of science.” Varmus was in Dhaka to take part in the 3-day Dhaka Lit-Fest held on the historic premises of Bangla Academy.
Vermus is internationally recognised for his research on retroviruses and the genetic basis of cancer. He has teamed up with the New York Genome Centeras a senior associate core member to promote the use of cancer genomics throughout the region.
