The Bangladesh Premier League gained a momentum at its outset as the thrilling match between the Chittagong Vikings and Rangpur Riders in which the latter secured a two-wicket victory left the spectators enthralled yesterday at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium.
Pakistan veteran Misbah-ul-Haque scripted the exciting win, taking the match away from Vikings who was outright favourite to clinch the victory before the match went to the death overs. Riders needed 91 runs in the last six overs, a seemingly tough task whatever the surface is. Misbah, provided the side an impetus having smashed 61 off 39, hitting three fours and four sixes and his power-hitting ability complemented by Thisara Perera’s 17 ball-43, left Vikings scratching their hairs with huge disappointments. Perera sent the ball four times across the boundary in addition of hitting three sixes.
As it was predicted, the Mirpur surface had plenty of runs. Chittagong Vikings who opted to bat first, compiled a healthy 187 for seven and Riders gunned it down in the last ball of the match.
Captain Tamim Iqbal and Tilkaratne Dilshan got off to a whirlwind start for the Vikings, adding 52 in just 4.1 overs before the latter was undone by youngster Abu Jayed Rahi. Dilshan plundered Shakib for two sixes to give the side a momentum. However his departure after hitting 16 ball-29 didn’t make any adverse impact as Tamim continued aggressive brand of cricket to leave the Riders bowlers in disarray. His marauding batting helped Chittagong reach 100 in just 11th overs from which going past 200 looked practical. However Tamim’s dismissal triggered a collapse and slowed down the scoring rate as Saqlain Sajib (three for 26) and Rahi (two for 26) propped up with controlled bowling.
The Icon of Chittagong clattered six fours and a six in his 51 off 32. Vikings’ Sri Lankan recruit Jeevan Mendis held together the innings by scoring at faster rate. Before being run out in the last over he smacked 39 off 18, clobbering three sixes and as many fours. His innings was decisive in setting a huge target for Riders who stumbled on their way to chase losing four wickets for just 23 runs including captain and icon Shakib Al Hasan.
After leaking 22 runs in his two overs, Shakib who returned to Dhaka from USA on Thursday night after being father for the first time, made just 1 in batting.
Pakistan fast bowler Mohammad Amir was the wrecker-in-chief. On his first competitive tournament outside the country after serving five-year suspension for spot-fixing scandal, Amir started with a maiden as Lendl Simmons got it tough to go over him.
He took away Simmons to end his uncomfortable stay but then in the immediate next ball trapped Soumya Sarkar lbw for 20 to stand on a hattrick. However he failed to complete it but Taskin Ahmed and Shafiul Islam dazzled around him to make Vikings absolute favourite.
Misbah revived Riders, adding 64 runs with Al-Amin who made a significant 38 off 28 with three fours and one six. But he went on berserk when it mattered most. With Thisara Perera he scored 80 off just 35 balls to take the side closer to victory.
Mohammad Amir again gave Vikings a hope, removing both of the batsmen in consecutive deliveries. But with 21 runs were needed off nine balls, Darren Sammy demolished Vikings hope with 18 off just 7. He was trapped run out, going for second runs which could win the match. However his run-out left the score level and Saqlain Sajib took the winning single in the last ball to give Riders a thrilling victory.
Aamir was the bowler to make most impact in the match with four for 30 but his effort went in vain as a result of Misbah’s extraordinary innings.
