The public works and housing ministry yesterday directed the authorities concerned to evict all commercial establishments running at the basements of buildings in the city within seven days. The decision was taken at an inter-ministerial meeting at the Secretariat, with housing and public works minister Mosharraf Hossain in the chair. “Basements were built for parking cars only and their designs were approved by the RAJUK. But many building-owners have rented their basements for commercial purposes instead of parking cars. We've directed the authorities concerned to evict them,” Mosharraf told reporters after the meeting. Besides, all ramps that were constructed occupying pavements or roads during construction of buildings will be demolished, he said. “The eviction drive will be conducted in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi and Khulna city corporation areas, too. Authorities of RAJUK, CDA, RDA and KDA will lead the eviction drive,” he added. The drive will begin within 7 days after forming committees, he said, adding that the drives will be conducted as per LGRD’s final list. The local government division will prepare the list of establishments, he said.
