Jamaat hartal today
STAFF REPORTER

BNP Standing Committee Member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat-e-Islami Secretary General Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid, hanged for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War in 1971, were buried at their respective ancestral homes in Chittagong and Faridpur yesterday. SQ Chowdhury was buried beside his father Fazlul Quader Chowdhury at the family graveyard at Gahira village in Raozan upazila of Chittagong around 9:30am after a namaj-e-janaza, said Additional Superintendent of Police Mostafizur Rahman, who supervised the burial. On the other hand, Mujahid was buried at the graveyard in front of Ideal Cadet Madrasah, 400 yards away from his residence at Paschim Khabashpur in Faridpur around 7:25am. Separate ambulances carrying the bodies of SQ Chowdhury and Mujahid from Dhaka, escorted by several vehicles of law enforcers, reached their native homes in the morning.
Majharul Islam, deputy jailer of Dhaka Central Jail, handed over the body of SQ Chowdhury to his younger son Hummam Quader Chowdhury around 9:10am while the body of Mujahid was handed over to his family members around 6:50am in presence of Additional Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur Abdur Rashid. Some family members attended the namaz-e-janaza of SQ Chowdhury held in front of their family mosque in the morning. The janaza was conducted by Mahibullah Babunagari, a teacher of Fatikchhari Nanupur Madrasah.
Speaking to reporters after the burial, SQ Chowdhury’s son Hummam Quader Chowdhury said his father had told him that he did not seek presidential clemency. Quoting his father, Hummam said, “When I spoke to him yesterday (on Saturday) at prison he said ‘Your 6 feet 2 inches tall father is a tiger; he can’t bow before anyone’.” “My father was hanged in an illegal verdict,” alleged Hummam.
In the press briefing, Jamaluddin Quader Chowdhury, younger brother of SQ Chowdhury, quoting his brother, said, “Regarding presidential clemency he said (SQ Chowdhury) ‘If I seek mercy, I will seek mercy to great Almighty Allah not to any man.’”  “An innocent man has been killed. Of course, the people of the country one day would demand justice for this,” said Hummam. “SQ Chowdhury was a man, proud and dignified like the lion, in Chittagong. There is a word ‘Legacy’ in English. One day the trial of the murder will be held. The people of Chittagong will not accept the verdict ever,” said Hummam.
During the press briefing Nizam-i- Islami party secretary Abdur Rahman Chowdhury, and other relatives of SQ Chowdhury were present. Besides, about 150 people, including family members and Jamaat-Shibir activists, attended the namaz-e-janaza of Mujahid held on the madrasah ground around 7:00am. It was conducted by his elder brother Afzal Mohammad Khaled. After nearly six years of trial proceedings, condemned war criminals Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid were hanged at Dhaka Central Jail in the early hours of Sunday for the atrocities they had committed during the Liberation War in 1971. Meanwhile, Bangladkesh Jamaat-e-Islami has called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for today protesting the execution of Mujahid. In a statement, Jamaat acting ameer Makbul Ahmad announced the strike.
