The Foreign Ministry has summoned Pakistan’s High Commissioner to Bangladesh Shuja Alam to meet the acting Foreign Secretary today, apparently to register a protest against the statement issued by the Foreign Ministry of Pakistan yesterday over the executions of BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury and Jamaat Secretary General Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid.
“Yes, Pakistan’s High Commissioner in Bangladesh was asked to meet the acting Foreign Secretary, Mizanur Rahman, tomorrow (Monday) afternoon,” a diplomatic source confirmed to The Independent.
Earlier, Qazi M Khalilullah, spokesperson of the Pakistan Foreign Ministry, expressed Islamabad’s ‘deep concern and anguish’ at the executions of the duo. He also said that Pakistan is ‘deeply disturbed’ by the development, according to the website of the Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry.
“We have noted with deep concern and anguish the unfortunate executions of the Bangladesh National Party Leader, Mr. Salauddin Quadir Chowdhury and Mr Ali Ahsan Mojaheed. Pakistan is deeply disturbed at this development,” said the spokesperson.
“As emphasized earlier, we have also been noting the reaction of the international community on the flawed trials in Bangladesh related to events of 1971,” he said.
“There is a need for reconciliation in Bangladesh in accordance with the spirit of Pakistan, India, Bangladesh Agreement of 9th April 1974. The Agreement calls for a forward looking approach in matters relating to 1971. This would foster goodwill and harmony,” said the spokesperson.
According to sources concerned, having been aware of the remarks, the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry communicated with the Pakistan’s High Commissioner and asked him to come to the ministry.
Like in the past, Bangladesh is expected to lodge a strong protest with the envoy, they said.
