Farmers profit from red amaranth

Farmers making good profit by cultivating red amaranth 'lal shak' in their lands at Dumrasur village in Sadar upazila of Gopalganj. They plant the crop on abandoned lands on the premises of their houses. Some are cultivating the same on commercial basis. Md Mizanur Rahman, Upazila Agriculture Officer, Gopalganj said at least 80 hectares of land has been brought under the cultivation of red amaranth in Sadar upazila of the district. Many farmers have changed their lot by growing the same.
This Correspondent recently visited different areas of Dumrasur, Nebokhali, Golabaria, Katorbari, Malibata, Karargati, Kangshur & Bedgram in Sadar upazila and talklted to some of the farmers. One of the farmers at  Dumrasur village said Tk four to five thousand is needed to cultivate red amaranth on one bigha of land. Sowing of seeds begins at the end of Bangla month of Ashar, but the full season begins from Kartik. During the season the vegetable can be plucked 5 to 7 times from the land. Excessive rain and flood are the main enemies of the vegetable. At the beginning of the season newly harvested crop is sold at exorbitant prices. Most of the farmers termed it as a profitable vegetable. Roma Biswas, 40, a female farmer of Dumrasur village said, "I have planted red amaranth on 26 decimals (half bigha) of land and I am expecting to earn at least Tk. 15,000 by selling the vegetable. I spent Tk 5,000 for the purpose.
