Members of fishing community yesterday urged the government and local administration to take initiatives to curb illegal catching of hilsa fish fries (Jatka) and expand its fishermen rehabilitation programme. In a press briefing held at the Bhola Kendrio Matshajibi Samabai Samity office, samity’s zila president Nurul Islam in a written statement alleged that under the shadow of the ruling party dishonest influential people destroyed hilsa fish fries (Jatka) using ‘Khuta’ and ‘Bindi’ net in the river Meghna and Tetulia. He also alleged that information about impending drive by coastguard members and mobile court is leaked to the dishonest fishermen and their leaders. This has made the drives against dishonest people catching fish largely ineffective, he said. The fishermen said most of the real fishermen are not getting facilities provided under the government rehabilitation facilities and identity card for allowance.
