Speakers at a discussion yesterday said that the disabled people could flourish their inherent talents to become worthy citizens of the soil if they were properly nurtured and provided with more financial and necessary opportunities, report s BSS. They said this at a discussion of a study titled "Protecting Health Rights of Persons with Disabilities: Gaps in Policy and Institutional Process" conducted by ActionAid Bangladesh at Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) auditorium in the city's Agargaon area. ActionAid Bangladesh organised the programme to explore the gaps in health policies and practices regarding the health and rehabilitation services of persons with disabilities in the country's health systems.
Senior secretary of General Economic Division (GED) of Planning Commission Professor Dr Shamsul Alam was present on the occasion as the chief guest while former member of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities of the United Nations Mansur Ahmed Chowdhury, Co-ordinator of the Centre for the Rehabilitation of the Paralysed (CRP) Valerie Tailor were present among others. They said that the disabled children and people deserve their proper constitutional rights, but not mercy, and they should get all privileges and human rights as they are the integral parts of the whole society. They suggested for providing necessary education and trainings to the disabled people and enable them getting higher education on medicine, engineering, agriculture, computer science and advanced technologies to enable them in taking part for building the country. They appreciated various steps already taken by the present government for the welfare of the disadvantaged people and urged for doing more to ensure their equal rights in the society as the worthy and resourceful citizens.
