plants’ at all its buildings

In an effort to propagate the use of renewable energy to thwart the looming energy crisis, the government has chalked out a plan to install mini solar plants on the rooftops of all government buildings across the country. “We have decided to install these mini solar plants on the rooftops of all district government buildings, and that includes Ganabhaban,” Power Division secretary Monowar Islam told The Independent on Thursday. The project to install mini solar plants on the rooftops will be launched at the district office in Jamalpur. After that, the government will identify appropriate buildings in each district within a month, with the help of the public works department (PWD). However, this is not the first time that an initiative to install mini solar plants on rooftops is being taken. Some initiatives by the government were taken earlier as well. Rahimafrooz Renewable Energy has installed a 50-kilowatt-peak (kWp) Grid Tied Solar Project on the rooftop of the Bangladesh Secretariat. The Dhaka Power Distribution Company Limited (DPDC) is buying electricity from this plant. That was the first power purchase contract through a solar plant—and a milestone for rooftop solar applications in the country. According to the agreement, under the project, 50kWp will be directly added to the national grid through an inverter. The DPDC is buying a unit for Tk. 19.95 for 20 years from the project.
The government has installed the biggest solar power plant on the rooftop of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics building in Dhaka. The plant—with a 200 kW power generation capacity, equivalent to lighting up 5,000 bulbs of 40 watts—meets a significant portion of the building’s demand for electricity. The solar plant was installed by InGen Technology Ltd. Again, the government-run 57-kW plant at Kaliakoir Hightech Park, a 50-kW plant on the rooftop of Bangladesh Bank’s main building and the privately owned 100-kW plant in Sandwip are the three other big solar power plants. Sources said more than 4 million solar home systems (SHS) are now generating more than 155 megawatts of solar power. Apart from the SHS, more than 100 solar irrigation pumps (SIPs), mini grids, street lamps, transceiver station towers for mobile operators and other sources are generating over 50 MW of electricity.
