Two flyovers-- Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover or Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover and Kuril Flyover-- were constructed in the capital city with the expectations of alleviating the sufferings of the people. But optimum utilisation of the flyovers could not be ensured yet. About five years have gone by since the inauguration of the Jatrabari-Gulistan Flyover, the biggest flyover in the country, but the organisation responsible for the implementation of the project could not complete the remaining works of the project yet. This failure has triggered a lot of sufferings for the commuters. Since the issue of fixation of toll has not been settled yet, minimum number of vehicles are playing on it.
After the construction of the flyover, the road beneath it has become narrow and that too has become hazardous due to absence of repairs. The road has developed potholes and ditches here and there, making it perilous for movement of vehicles. Besides, there are piles of garbage on the two sides of the road that spread nauseating smell.
On the other hand, hardly two years have elapsed since the opening of the Kuril Flyover but it has developed a lot of problems due to lack of care and maintenance. During the last monsoon big potholes and ditches developed at the Khilkhet point of the flyover. Free-style dumping of garbage, setting up of bus, truck and taxi stand and small shops by unscrupulous people under this flyover, regularly contribute to traffic jams. Just after dusk, the area turns into a den of criminals, drug addicts and muggers.
It is high time for the relevant authorities to take care of the flyovers. First the incomplete works of the Hanif Flyover should be completed on a priority basis. The roads beneath both the flyovers should be cleaned and repaired for free movement of vehicles.
The tolls of the flyovers should be fixed at reasonable amounts so that maximum number of vehicles can ply over those. If these are done the people will derive maximum benefits from these infrastructures.
