Money and greed

ROBERT CLEMENTS

He was going around, dropping a bundle of fake thousand rupee notes. Then he’d hide behind a parked car and watch as an employee of his colony, picked it up and put it in his pocket. The next moment he would spring from behind the parked car onto the unfortunate victim, and tell him it was terrible having a dishonest person working here and that he should have returned the notes to the office. The poor watchman or sweeper, glanced with fear at the bundle of notes they’d not realized was fake and now an even worst fate greeted them, they were being labeled as dishonest.
“Why are you doing that?” asked a friend.
“I want to weed out dishonesty!” he said.
“But six months ago, didn’t you make a false complaint against someone in your colony, saying he had hit a watchman, and make these same employees strike work in protest, even though they knew it was a lie? How can you teach honesty to the same people you taught dishonesty to? asked his friend, in disbelief.
This is a real incidence and I have seen the same repeated in a hundred different ways.
The phone rings and the father shouts to his little son, “Tell whoever it is that daddy isn’t at home!”
A little later when he finds his son involved in a cheating incident or that his son has told him a lie, the father asks, “How could you do this?”
“The same way you do it!” thinks the son silently.
I see this happening with our leaders, with priests, with parents. They have no qualms telling the lie while lecturing others not to do so.
Today children learn very young to drive past a red light because their parents do so. They watch as a bribe is paid to the traffic policeman. They watch money paid for them to pass their exams and later when the same child fights for a share of the property using untruthful methods, the parents wonder where he learned such.
We have a government today that has added a new tax to clean the country: Swatch Bharat! But fills the air with foul smelling words and rhetoric during election time! Will anyone believe them, when what they need to do first is a sweeping clean of their minds?
The man with the fake thousand rupee notes continues to drop them, while the watchmen, the sweeper and the others snigger!
A week ago, a whole state in India sniggered..!
