Former national football star Badal Roy has confirmed his candidature for the post of president of the Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) in the federation’s upcoming election. He was speaking to reporters at the National Press Club in the capital yesterday. Badal, a vice-president of the current BFF committee, is still recovering from a serious illness. But he has announced his desire to contest the BFF poll to be held on April 20, after a potential candidate, Tarafdar Ruhul Amin, decided to step aside.
He also said he would go to the Prime Minister to seek her consent to contest the election. Badal, who is critical of the BFF committee’s activities in the last three terms, said: “I can’t avoid responsibility for the failure of the present committee as I am also a part of it. In the last 12 years, there was no developmental work. The country’s football has not made any progress at all.”
"Now, football is dead. I can’t avoid responsibility as one of the members of the federation. We should bring about a change and I want to throw a challenge to Salahuddin as the presidential candidate," he added. He further said that he would talk to Salahuddin soon to express his desire to contest for the president’s post. “I will not budge from my decision and want to send a clear message to Salahuddin Bhai that we will not let him go unchallenged. I love football and would be ready to sacrifice anything for the development of the game,” he added.
Swadhin Bangla Football Team captain Zakaria Pintu, vice-captain Pratap Shanker Hazra, former national stars Golam Sarwar Tipu, Sheikh Mohammed Aslam, Kaiser Hamid, Khurshid Babul, and Hasanuzzaman Bablu, among others, were present.
