Kanthoshilon, a well-known recitation organisation in the country, is going to remember noted Tagore exponent and cultural activist Waheedul Haq on the occasion of his 87th birth anniversary. A two-day event titled ‘Waheedul Haq Memorial Festival’ has been arranged in remembrance of the veteran writer, journalist and also the founder member Kanthoshilon at Shawkat Osman Memorial auditorium of Central Public Library in Shahbag of the capital on March 6 and 7
With the slogan ‘Manusher Cheye Boro Kichu Nai’ (Nothing is bigger than man), the inauguration ceremony of the two-day festival will take place tomorrow at 9am. Eminent actor Syed Hasan Imam will inaugurate the event, while State Minister for Cultural Affairs KM Khalid will be present as chief guest and Sammilita Sangskritik Jote president Golam Kuddus will be present as special guest.
Moreover, ‘Waheedul Haq Memorial Festival Award’ will also be conferred as part of the event. This year, noted cultural personality Ataur Rahman has been nominated for the award.
During the two-day festival, artistes from across the country will participate in recitation sessions, while artistes from different recitation troupes like Surteertha, Tamanna Rahman, Banhisikha, Muktadhara Sangskritik Charchya Kendra, Swakolpon, Satyensen Shilpigosthi and Kalparekha will take part in group performances.
On the second day of the festival, Kanthoshilon will also celebrate the historic 7th March speech of Bangabandhu by staging its new recitation production ‘Bangabandhu: Bhalobese Hridoye Rekhechhi’. Scripted by Hasan Jahangir and directed by Mir Barkat, the production will be inaugurated by freedom-fighter and recitation artiste Ashraful Alam.
Born on March 16, 1933, Waheedul Haq was a campaigner-activist for social-political-cultural causes and a founder of several cultural institutions.
He was one of the founding members of leading cultural organisation Chhayanaut in 1961. Chhayanaut played a vital role in the cultural-political scenario during the late 1960s, prior to the country’s Liberation War.
He was also the founder member of Nalonda, Anandadhani, Fulki, Bratochari Samity and Bashanto Utsab Udjapon Parishad. He also formed the Jatiya Rabindra Sangeet Sammilan Parishad in 1980.
He was posthumously given the Ekushey Padak in 2008 and Independence Day Award in 2010.
He died in Dhaka on January 27 in 2007.
