Farmers are delighted with a rise in the demand for red cabbages, which contain a lot of zinc and iron, as the vegetable is being sold in local markets at high prices.
It is thought that the red cabbage reduces chances of cancer. It has become popular in the Noakhali coastal belt this season.
At present, red cabbages are being sold for Tk 55–60a kg in the Maijdee municipality market, while it is selling for Tk 35–40 in Manna Nagor and Ewasbalia. Until recently, middlemen used to buy red cabbages at cheap rates and sell them at double the price. But the hike in the demand for red cabbages has made the farmers happy.
Monir Miha, a marginal farmer, said he cultivated red cabbages on 40 decimals of land using modern technology and spent Tk 23,000 in the process. He will sell the crop at Maijdee and adjoining bazaars and haats. He said no agricultural officers had come to offer ay help and so untrained farmers like him had to collect the seeds and grow the crop on their own. He collected the seeds from Cumilla. Other farmers also spoke of getting no help or guidance from the agricultural department.
Last week, Monir earned Tk 27,000 by selling his red cabbages. Each kg of the vegetable had sold for Tk 55 in the Maijdee Municipality market. Middlemen, on the other hand, use to force them to sell at only Tk 28–30 per kg.
A farmer said Noakhali soil was favourable for red cabbage cultivation. Farmers of Subarnchar, Sadar upazila, are expecting to earn handsome money by selling red cabbages.
A source in the Sadar upazila agriculture office (AED) said red cabbages had been cultivated on 700 hectares this year.
