Eviction drive from Shyamasundari Canal begins tomorrow

Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa has said eviction of all 170 identified illegal occupants of the Shyamasundari Canal will begin from March 5 to turn Rangpur into a clean and eco-friendly city. He said this at a view-exchange meeting jointly organised by Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC), the district administration and Water Development Board (WDB) in Roghunathganj area alongside the canal in the city on Monday afternoon.

The meeting was arranged to publish the current survey report on Shyamasundari Canal, to exchange views before launching of the eviction drive and inform people about post-eviction work plan for re-excavation, renovation and beautification of the canal.

Presided over by Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan, Acting Divisional Commissioner (General) Md Zakir Hossain, Acting Deputy Inspector General of Rangpur Range Police TM Mozahedul Islam, Deputy Police Commissioner of Rangpur Metropolitan Police Md Abul Sufian, Superintending Engineer for Rangpur Crile of BWDB Harun-Ar-Rashid, Chief Executive Officer of RpCC Ruhul Amin Mian, Chief Executive Officer of Rangpur Cantonment Board Aleya Ferdous Jahan and Director of Riverine People and Associate Professor of Begum Rokeya University Dr Tuhin Wadud addressed the meeting.

On the occasion, the city mayor with other officials concerned unveiled cover of the current survey report book on Shyamasundari Canal in presence of city councilors, civil society members and common people from all walks in life.

The meeting disclosed that the survey was conducted alongside 9.80- kilometre length of the historical 16-kilometre long Shyamasundari Canal with 23 to 90 feet width which was dug in 1890 to save the city people from deadly mosquito- and water-borne diseases.

The survey identified 170 illegal occupants of the canal, including five occupants in Kellabond area, 47 in Radhaballav area, 54 in Alamnagar area, 49 in Raghunathganj area and one illegal occupant in Bhogi area of the city.
