A Pirojpur court yesterday granted bail to former Awami League lawmaker AKMA Awal and his wife Laila Parvin in a corruption case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The same court earlier in the morning rejected their bail prayers in three corruption cases. Meanwhile, District and Sessions judge of Pirojpur, Abdul Mannan, was stand released on charges of corruption within hours after he sent Awal and his wife to jail.
Nahid Nasrin, joint district and Sessions Judge-2 of Pirojpur, took charge as the acting district judge and granted the Awal couple bail. Advocate for ACC Md Mansur Uddin Hawlader confirmed the mater. The couple appeared before the court yesterday morning at around 11am with a bail plea. After hearing, the court sent them to jail cancelling their bail prayer.
After the court passed the rejection order, supporters of the ex-MP started demonstrating in the court premise. His supporters also forcibly closed down all nearby shops and blocked roads in the court area with logs and torched tires.
Earlier, on January 7, Awal and his wife took interim bail from the High Court. Later on, the Supreme Court carried on the HC's order following the appeal of ACC for canceling the bail.
Awal was an MP from Pirojpur-1 for two consecutive terms in 2008 and 2014.
