Coca-Cola chairman visits Dhaka, announces $200m investment

Soft drink giant Coca-Cola yesterday announced that it will invest US $200 million in Bangladesh.

“Coca-Cola has invested USD 100 million in the past years, and plans to invest another US $200 million in the next five years in Bangladesh,” James Quincey, chairman and CEO of Coca-Cola Company, announced the plan during his maiden visit to Bangladesh.

James Quincey said the company’s initiative to economically empower 100,000 women by 2020 and its investment plans for Bangladesh, at a conference with women entrepreneurs organised by Women Business Centre, a women empowerment model of Coca-Cola Bangladesh, in the capital.

“The concept of sustainable development is at the heart of the Coca-Cola Company and the way it does business. The company has continuously been striving to create lasting positive impacts in the communities it proudly serves,” he added.

According to the company, Coca-Cola brought the 5by20 initiative to life in Bangladesh by launching Women Business Centres (WBC). The WBC is a model that supports rural Bangladeshi women entrepreneurs by providing skills development and financial assistance support.

The 5by20 is Coca-Cola Company's global initiative that aims to enable the economic empowerment of 5 million women entrepreneurs across the company's value chain by 2020.

Each WBC provides training, goods and services to hundreds of women.

As of now, 240 WBCs are operating and empowering over 70,000 women across Bangladesh. By the end of 2020, over 1,00,000 Bangladeshi women and their families will benefit from the Women Business Centres. The project currently is active in Jamalpur, Khulna and Bagerhat districts in the northpwest and south-west of Bangladesh.

Coca-Cola is operating various programmes, such as "Every Drop Matters" and WASH, both of which help to provide water, sanitation, hygiene, as well as rainwater harvesting projects in schools across the country. The company is also working towards clean and pollution-free oceans.

In Bangladesh, the soft drink giant has been contributing to the coastal clean-up and marine conservation of St Martin’s Island for the past nine years as part of the company’s global commitment to create a “World Without Waste” by 2030.

Krishna Kumar, president of India & South-east Asia of Coca-Cola Company; Stacy Lynn Apter, executive assistant to the CEO; Manuel "Manolo" Arroyo, chief marketing officer and group president, Asia Pacific; Marcelo Boffi, president and bottling investments group and deputy group president, Asia Pacific; Sundeep Bajora, vice-president, South West Asia operations; Ishteyaque Amjad, vice-president, public affairs and communications, Coca-Cola India and South Asia; and Ajay Bathija, managing director, Coca-Cola Company, were present at the event.

The main products of Coca-Cola Bangladesh are Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite, Fanta, Kinley Water, Kinley Soda, Coca-Cola Zero, Sprite Zero, Thumbs Up Current etc. The company said Coca-Cola has directly created employment for more than 500 people and more than 5,000 indirectly in Bangladesh.
